Hotel Review February 2012

Hotel Review – 14th February 2012
The Carlton George Hotel, 44 West George Street, Glasgow G2 1DH, Scotland

Summary
The Carlton George Hotel in Glasgow is essentially a business hotel, and caters very well in this regard. Its location is right in the centre of Glasgow, in West George Street which is adjacent to Buchanan Street and just along from Queen Street railway station. Its rooms have just been refurbished (this process finished in Jan 2012) and as such feel fresh and bright. It has an excellent Business Lounge and can cater for small business meetings in its Boardroom facility. Windows restaurant overlooks Glasgows rooftops and serves excellent fare. Overall I would recommend this hotel to the business man/woman as a great hotel in a central location with excellent facilities and freshly decorated rooms.

Review
I met with Duncan Johnston, the hotel’s General Manager of 5 years, in the pass-key-only Executive Lounge on the 7th floor. Duncan had previously been with Channings Hotel in Edinburgh so has a good grasp of the hotel business in Scotland’s 2 main cities! Duncan is down-to-earth and was very willing to share as much about the Carlton George Hotel as he could, and is clearly (and rightly) proud of the hotel and what it has to offer.
Duncan said of his time at the hotel that his biggest achievements have included increasing customer care levels and improving occupancy levels despite the current economic climate and over seeing a £350K refurbishment of all 64 rooms in the last 12 months. The next 12 months promises its own challenges as the rooftop restaurant, Windows, undergoes a major upgrading and the corridors are at the mercy of the designer as they head for redecoration. The main business target is to consolidate and if possible improve on the last 12 months results.

The Hotel
The Carlton George Hotel is owned by English-based The Foundation Group and is one of The Carlton Hotel Collection in their portfolio. The building itself is a 7-storey terraced property which was built new in 1999, replacing the gap-site that blotted the landscape beforehand.
Situated on West George Street the Carlton George is just 30 yards from the top of Buchanan Street, one of Glasgow’s main shopping areas, and round the corner from Buchanan St Subway station. In the other direction it’s 100 yards from Queen Street railway station and is right next to Waxy O’Connors bar and bistro. Nearby shops include Laura Ashley, a Sainsburys Local, Pizza Crolla and Pizza Hut. Slightly further along West George Street is one of Glasgow’s main attractions, George Square, home to many festival and music attractions.
The main business the hotel sees during the week is corporate, but weekend leisure guests are increasing in number, probably due to its city centre location.

Rooms
The Carlton George Hotel has 64 rooms, of which, in increasing quality, 30 are Superior, 18 are Executive and 16 are Club. They are a mixture of doubles and twins, all King size beds with a significant number of “zip and link” mattresses, allowing maximum flexibility to switch between double and twin rooms. I was shown round rooms 201, 205, 301 and 608, a mixture of all different room types. The refurbishment has seen all 64 rooms redecorated and re-carpeted, and now all have very similar décor, with a red and gold theme running through them. One feature of all the bathrooms is that they are tiled with a single row of tartan tiles, one of which is the Royal Stewart tartan.
There are a total of 5 sets of inter-connecting rooms, allowing families of 4 to stay effectively in the same room space.
In addition to the standard facilities entry-level Superior rooms have over-bath showers, heated bathroom mirrors, air-conditioning, flat-screen televisions including Sky Sports 1, 2 and 3, complementary WiFi, an in-room safe, an iron and board and a trouser press. In common with the other room types as well, the most impressive “freebie” is complementary Gordon’s Gin, Bell’s Whisky and Sherry, presented in glass decanters! I’m assured that not many rooms have any left at the end of a stay!
The next level Executive rooms have all the amenities of Superior rooms but in addition have free access to the Executive Lounge, fancy headboards for the beds and an outside view from the windows.
Club rooms have Sony iPod docks as standard and are significantly bigger than the other room types. They also have balconies overlooking West George Street.

Executive Lounge
This is situated on the 7th floor of the hotel and is accessed via a keycard by guests staying in Executive or Club rooms only. Within the lounge there is a hot drinks machine and fridges with soft drinks and mixers, together with a small selection of alcoholic drinks which are available from 5pm until 10-45pm daily.
It’s an informal setting for meetings or small discussion groups, and has a coal-effect gas fire as a centre-point in the smaller of 2 informal seated areas.
There are two internet-ready computer stations for those needing to keep abreast of events and free printing for those needing to record them.

Business Space
Within the Executive Lounge there is the Thomson Boardroom, a small meeting room capable of hosting up to 14 people for either a business meeting or for private dining. It has natural light and air conditioning and provides that additional privacy should you require it.

Windows Restaurant
Also located on the 7th floor, Windows is allegedly Glasgow’s only rooftop restaurant! It can sit up to 50 diners and having sampled the food as a “mystery diner” I can vouch for its excellence. The views of Glasgow’s rooftops are much heralded, however I would prefer a beach view or be able to watch a big sporting event, but hey, that’s just me! It’s due for a complete refurbishment in 2012 with possibly even a name change, so look out for that! Opening hours are 5pm to 9-45pm, with pre-theatre seating available from 5pm to 7pm.

Some things you might not know!
As mentioned above I was amazed to learn that the Carlton George gives complementary whisky, gin and sherry in every room! What’s more it’s presented in glass decanters (one for each drink…) and you don’t even need a key to get to them!
There is an “I-Point Infopoint” machine just inside the front door which you can use to search for information about Glasgow and its surrounds. Very useful and saves you waiting for the concierge to become free!
The corridors in this Glasgow hotel are tastefully decorated with prints of original paintings by Gerard M Burns, a Glaswegian artist whose work can be found on his own website, www.gerardmburns.com. I’m told these prints will survive the corridor revamp which is happening later this year!
For the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games the Carlton George has had to set aside 45 of its 64 rooms, that’s 70% of its rooms, to the official Glasgow 2014 organisation! That means that it’s more important than ever to get your hotel bookings made via www.hotels.tv/glasgow as soon as possible. Remember, you pay on departure with us too!
